South West Rail Link opening delights community before crack of dawn

It’s not everyday a new train line opens.

Enthused residents flocked to Leppington Station to board the first train on the South West Rail Link at 5.03am today.

Two new stations, Leppington and Edmondson Park, have been built along the 11.4km rail line, which runs from Leppington to Edmondson Park and Glenfield before trains terminate at Liverpool.

“This is a great example of how we are determined to make a difference ... and the community will benefit from the best train service we can provide,” Mr Baird said.

State Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said today was a day for the community.

“This is a rail line we’re building for the community and future generations,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“The community can feel confident the supporting infrastructure is here to support their needs.”

John Devos, of Leppington, bought the first train ticket from Leppington Station.

He thought he was going to be the only one to board the first train to depart from Leppington.

“It was overwhelming to see so many people here at this time of the morning after I arrived at 4.10am,” Mr Devos said.

“It’s a whole new world. This will be such a handy thing to have when I need to do shopping in Liverpool or need to go to the airport.”

Resident of more than 60 years, John Selakovic said it was always a dream of his parents to one day see something happen in Leppington.

“Today is that day. It has finally happened,” Mr Selakovic said.

“This is a sign that there’s development and it’s a promising sign for us. It’s something to plant our hope on for the future.”

Lucy Zeng was on her way to the airport from Liverpool Station when she thought her train had arrived early.

“I guess we’re the real first customers using the line to get to the airport,” Ms Zeng said.

“I came early and was surprised to see a full train going to Glenfield so it must really be our lucky day,” she said.
